20 Years Of Radio Communication
Thursday, November 19, 2009 1:03Over twenty years in the motorola radio business and I have seen huge changes within the industry, ‘some for better’ and others ‘better for some’. One can’t help but think how powerful the likes of Motorola have become, expanding their product ranges to encompass seas of mobile telephones to mirror the broad range of professional radio products they purvey.
It’s hard to imagine the M crown being able to slip in the presence of the likes of Nokia within the mobile phone arena, but that’s what has happened globally, causing a huge imbalance in their business model. Year on year the Motorola Empire exists and grows through the continued successes of being the world’s biggest manufacturer and supplier of semiconductor components and specialist radio communication products. You would think with that entire heritage and development funding that they could manufacture a mobile phone that everyone wanted wouldn’t you! How very strange..
OH-NO-MOTO
Without doubt their professional two way radio communications arm continues to stretch out, reaching the world with ever better and more advanced products. Pouring gallons of early funding into TETRA was without question to set the company ahead of the competition in a field that would transform radio methods for larger users within the public and private utilities sectors. How smart a financial investment was that to see them position themselves as a premier provider within the digital radio revolution? I remember the early Motorola radio products, the blue hand held radio that was chrome metal framed and sandwiched in the most durable plastic cover you could imagine.
The MT500.
This Motorola two way radio was probably the landmark radio that put big M on the radio communications map. Boy it was a tough tool. I read it described as a ‘PMR radio‘ used by the American Police as standard and earned its reputation for robustness very easily. I recall an archive news cutting describing how a Policeman had found himself un-armed in a rather unfortunate situation with a vicious dog, who had taken a liking to his blue serge uniform – he was documented as being able to beat off the dog with his trusty Motorola MT500 2 way radio then call in for backup on the very same weapon… err sorry handheld radio! My own excursion into the world of the MT was when I purchased one from a UK Radio Rally. I had discovered the transistor RF PA device was well under rated in its use within this hand held radio and do you know – I had used its final transmitting components to fabricate a Packet Data transmitter that could ‘in very quick data bursts’ produce an amazing 10 watts of RF from a device that was usually producing 3 watts from inside a portable radio. Many stories of this Motorola radio requiring constant retuning and field service were probably borne of being one of the most widely used portable handie talkie radios in American history.
Mmmmm let me see what did we have as a handheld radio in the UK about that time… Ahh yes, The DYMAR – moving swiftly on… You have to admit when Motorola make a radio it stays in production for a very long time, look at the GP300, Motorola GP300, GP900/MTS2000 Jedi and the GP340, Motorola GP340 Pro Series, making perfect investment sense to the customer and radio hire company who does not want to pay out premium money for a radio system only to find its been superseded in 12 months by the next model, resulting in instantly reducing the value of his operating asset. Kenwood Radio and a few others have been guilty of this over the years; they have not seemingly gained any ground using it as a sales game plan. (With one notable exception – Motorola have released a replacement, the CP185 to take over from the Motorola CP040 / CP200 Motorola Commercial Series models ) Latterly we have seen this constant ‘new model’ release scenario develop in the world of mobile phones to a great degree but seemingly this sales strategy has never met real success in the field of professional walkie talkie type communications.
